Residential Property Flipping in British Columbia, 2019 to 2021
Stats Can

A new analysis from Statistics Canada shows that home flipping — meaning properties being bought and then sold in less than one year — accounted for just 2.8% of properties sold in B.C. between 2019 and 2021. The proportion was the highest in 2021 when 3.3% of homes were flipped.
  • Higher rates were found in urban areas, and condominiums were flipped at higher rates than other types of housing.
  • The federal government has enacted new rules making income from these types of properties subject to business taxes, and the B.C. government has passed its own home-flipping tax, to take effect on January 1st.
