Hello Nebraskans,

It was a busy week in DC! The service member Quality of Life National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) had top billing this week, along with the Liberty for Laundry Act, and the JUDGES Act of 2024.

Service member QoL and NDAA

This year I co-chaired the bipartisan Military Quality of Life (QoL) panel with Rep. Houlahan (D-PA) to review compensation, housing, access to medical care, access to childcare, and supporting spouses. Nearly all of our recommendations were included in the final agreement with the Senate which provides a historic boost to the men, women, and families of our All Volunteer Force.

The NDAA passed with a bipartisan majority of 281 to 140. This legislation delivers the most comprehensive military QoL reforms in history including:

  • 14.5% pay raise for junior enlisted
  • 4.5% pay raise for all others
  • Massive repairs to the barracks and dorms
  • New housing
  • Federal hiring preferences for spouses
  • Incentive 100% hiring at childcare centers
  • More mental health professionals and nurses

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

H.R.7673 - Liberty for Laundry Act

This bill limits the authority of the Department of Energy (DOE) to enforce energy conservation standards on American citizens. The government needs to keep their hands off our laundry machines, unnecessary enforcements don’t help anyone. The bill passed 215 to 200.

H.R.9625 - JUDGES Act of 2024

We passed S.4199 this week. It is a companion bill to H.R.9626, JUDGES Act of 2024 that I cosponsored. This legislation will authorize additional district judges for the district court, including one for Nebraska that helps with the multi-year backlog overloads and 724,000 pending cases.

MEETINGS & EVENTS

The For Country Caucus hosted the Air Force Chief of Staff, David Allvin for an update on the modernization of the world’s greatest Air Force.

In my office, we met with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and discussed the work they do on behalf of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans like me.

It was a pleasure meeting with Latvian Ambassador Kuzma and MP Kalnina, Secretary of Latvian Foreign Affairs Committee.

Dad joke of the week:

What do you call a cow with no legs?

Answer: Ground meat!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you and our great state Nebraska! It is an honor to serve and legislate with my fellow House colleagues. We have a lot to get done. For more up-to-date events please follow my X, Facebook, and Instagram accounts.

Sincerely,
