Actions for the week of December 16, 2024
Greetings, Activists!
Winter is here and, as the cold sets in, it’s a great time to turn up the heat on our elected leaders to prioritize climate goals and environmental justice. Here are some quick, simple climate actions to help you stay fired up as the weather cools!
Thank you for joining us to take action on behalf of people and planet this year. See you in 2025!
Action 1
🤑📜🖋️ Governor Hochul: Sign the climate bills sitting on your desk!
This call shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, and is a great way to put pressure on the Governor to seal the deal.
-
Call 518-474-8390
-
Skip the recorded message by pressing 2 to speak to a staffer or pressing 1 to leave a voicemail. If you are on hold for too long, press 1 at any time to leave a voicemail
-
Here is a sample script, but feel free to use your own words!
“Hi, my name is ____ and I live in ZIP code _____. I am calling to urge Governor Hochul to side with New Yorkers over fossil fuel companies, and sign the Climate Change Superfund Act as well as the ban on fracking using CO2. Our state legislature has already passed these bills. Show some climate leadership and sign them immediately. New York residents shouldn’t be stuck with the bill for disasters caused by the world’s wealthiest fossil fuel corporations, and we shouldn’t allow fracking here after we banned it the first time. Thank you.”
Action 2
🛢️☠️🫷 President Biden: Stop these fossil fuel projects while you still can
The election is over, and now we must do all we can to protect vulnerable communities from the impacts of a Trump presidency. Right now, President Biden has just one more month before Trump takes the White House — which means he has that much time to deny the export authorizations for six super-polluting gas projects.
Part 1
Sign on to tell Biden to stop these harmful projects!
Part 2
Additionally, you can also call in! Lock in climate progress before Trump takes office — call Senate Majority Leader Schumer and House Minority Leader Jeffries to demand that Biden’s Department of Energy deny all pending LNG export terminal proposals.
-
Senator Schumer: (202) 224-6542 (Washington), or (212) 486-4430 (NYC)
-
Democratic Leader Jeffries: (202) 225-5936 (Washington), (718) 237-2211 (Central Brooklyn), (718) 373-0033 (South Brooklyn).
If you are a constituent of Jeffries, be sure to mention this!
-
Sample script:
“Hi, my name is ___, and I am a New Yorker. I am calling to urge the Senator / Leader to ensure that the Department of Energy denies permits for all six pending LNG terminal projects. Any of these projects would be a climate bomb. Denying the permits will slow down the next administration’s efforts to fast track them, and will show that you are willing to fight Trump’s plan to torch the planet. We are asking for your leadership on this by contacting the Biden Administration and urging that the permits be denied ASAP. Thank you.”
Action 3
⚖️🌱🤝 EPA: Release promised environmental justice funds now
Long story short, the EPA has funds that are meant to invest in environmental justice communities that it hasn’t released yet. Now that the December 6th deadline has passed and we’ve met all requirements on time, we need your help to release the funds before inauguration on January 20th.
Add your name to the petition now.
