It may be a holiday week, but that does not mean I don’t have useful tips for democracy-lovers. First the obvious, enjoy time with your friends and family, take a long walk and stay hydrated.

In full disclosure, I grew up in a Jewish household that did not celebrate Christmas at all. However, I still have some holiday-friendly tips regardless of your religion or traditions. So here they are.

Buy a last-minute gift

There is always room for one more present under the tree or to fill a night of Hannukah. If you are at a loss for ideas, give your loved one the gift of Democracy Docket exclusive content. They will love it, I promise. And do me a favor, post your gift on Bluesky and tag me! Plus, if you’re not yet a member yourself, there’s no better community for pro-democracy readers who stand in opposition to the next administration. Join us!

Go to a movie

I know you think that going to the movies on Christmas is just for us Jews, but it is a great way to celebrate the day. The key is that you need to go to a real movie theater — no streaming at home allowed. I recommend the new Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.

Eat Chinese food

OK, this one really is probably just for Jews. But those celebrating Christmas can do this later in the week and get in the spirit. The key is not to go fancy. You want authentic Chinese food, not some upscale fusion place. I promise, you will thank me later.

Stay strong

I know things feel chaotic and overwhelming. But know that there are millions of people who agree with you and are ready to stand up a new opposition.

Get some rest

I have spent most of the last few weeks telling people to stop saying they are exhausted as an excuse to avoid politics. But this week you have my permission. Be tired, get rest. Do whatever you need to start the new year ready to fight for our democracy and the rule of law.
