John,
Donald Trump’s return to the White House is an existential threat to Minnesota’s most cherished natural resource, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
During his first term as president, Trump reinstated expired mineral leases for Twin Metals, a Chilean-owned mining conglomerate, and stopped a study on the risks of copper-sulfide mining. When the science didn’t fit Trump’s political agenda, his officials literally blacked out a 60-page report to hide the truth.
However, thanks to our tireless efforts, we’ve made significant progress during the Biden-Harris administration:
- Illegal mineral leases were canceled.
- A 20-year federal mineral ban was enacted near the BWCA.
- The courts dismissed Twin Metals’ meritless lawsuit.
But make no mistake — this fight is far from over. Trump has made it clear that he wants mining, and he will open the Boundary Waters to exploitation. And his extremist allies in Congress are already laying the groundwork.
We can’t let this happen.
The Boundary Waters isn’t just a Minnesota treasure; it’s a national legacy. Protecting it means safeguarding clean water, pristine wilderness, and the livelihoods of those who depend on it.
Over the next two years, I will not stop until the BWCA is permanently protected from toxic mining. And as long as you stick with me, I know we’ll get the job done.
With our end-of-year fundraising deadline coming up on Tuesday, December 31, could you chip in $10, $25, $50, or whatever works today so we can keep up the fight and preserve Minnesota’s greatest natural resource during the Trump administration?
Thank you for standing with me,
Betty McCollum
