When I considered starting a pro-democracy site in the fall of 2019, I could never have imagined what it would become.
A quarterly email with a few hundred followers on an ad hoc email list has become daily and weekly newsletters with nearly 300,000 subscribers. A website launched in March 2020 to house my occasional writings, has grown into a leading source of information about democracy and the courts. What was once a place to post pleadings in a handful of voting cases has turned into a comprehensive database of nearly 1,000 voting, election and redistricting lawsuits.
Through it all, my singular focus has been to provide you with fearlessly and unapologetically pro-democracy news, information and analysis for all — while remaining loyal only to our readers and never to corporate interests. That is what we did in the aftermath of the 2020 election when Democracy Docket tracked and reported on every one of Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the election in court. It is what we did when the Supreme Court was considering and deciding cases that would shape our country for a generation. And it is what we have continued to do after the 2024 election.
While legacy news outlets pull back their pro-democracy coverage, Democracy Docket is expanding its content. While corporate interests seek to kiss the ring, Democracy Docket has pledged it will not back down, and it will not obey.
To meet its mission, the team has grown to 17, with plans to expand further in the New Year. To make that possible, Democracy Docket launched a paid membership program in March. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.
In addition to the free content, members receive my weekly tip-sheet and weekend reading list. They also receive my monthly report on the State of Democracy and my exclusive Litigation Look Ahead.
The challenges to democracy are daunting and so too is operating a standalone, independent outlet like Democracy Docket.
