Egale Canada's 2024 Impact Report
We're thrilled to share the incredible milestones we've made together with our 2024 Impact Report
As 2024 draws to a close, I’m reflecting on an extraordinary year at Egale Canada. Despite rising levels of anti-2SLGBTQI hate, your support has afforded us the resilience necessary to move forward.
Together, we’ve achieved remarkable milestones and positives impacts for 2SLGBTQI communities across Canada.
| From Start to Finish in 2024 | | | Egale stood up for the rights, safety, and inclusion of 2SLGBTQI youth through every pillar of our work – through our legal advocacy by fighting for the rights of trans and gender diverse young people in the courts, our wide range of inclusive schools education initiatives, awareness campaigns like our Coming Out Together campaign, and research examining the importance of affirming adults caring for 2SLGBTQI youth.
In 2024 we saw an unacceptable trend from 2023 continue; discriminatory policies that use fear and disinformation to target 2SLGBTQI young people, a particularly small and vulnerable part of the community. As long as these policies remain in place, Egale will continue to fight them in court, and show 2SLGBTQI youth in every way we can that we are in their corner. | | | Egale’s work in 2024 also provided support for 2SLGBTQI people living with dementia and their unpaid carers through our award-winning awareness campaign, Help Us Remain, which includes an audiobook, short film, and resources informed by our research report, Coming Out and Coming In to Living with Dementia. Now more than ever, we recognize the need to support older adults and seniors in our 2SLGBTQI communities and we plan to expand on this work in 2025 with research to better understand experiences of housing insecurity by 2SLGBTQI veterans. | | | | With the ongoing rise in misinformation and hate targeting trans and gender diverse communities, much of our work in 2024 focused on research, education, awareness, and legal advocacy initiatives to combat the misinformation and hate that is leading to discrimination and violence. Our premier research report of 2024 was Working for Change, a national study on employment experiences and challenges for Two Spirit, trans, and nonbinary people.
Egale’s educational programming such as our workshop and companion resources, Draw-The-Line Against Transphobic Violence in Schools, helped participants recognize and intervene in the harmful dynamics that perpetuate transphobia to foster cultures of consent and gender inclusion.
Our 2024 Pride Season awareness campaign, See the Person, set out to encourage viewers to see the person, not the label by sharing the stories of three inspiring role models who just happen to be trans. And finally, in our ongoing legal advocacy work, such as our case against the Government of
Alberta where they have relied on misinformation to target gender diverse youth, preventing them from accessing safe and essential medical care. | | Countering 2SLGBTQI Hate with Egale's Rainbow Action Hub | | | To counter rising anti-2SLGBTQI hate, in 2024 we launched the Rainbow Action Hub, offering free resources, tools, and education to support individuals and organizations in understanding and promoting the role we can all play in tackling anti-2SLGBTQI hate in Canada and abroad. Since its launch, the hub continues to grow, with many more tools and resources already in the works for 2025.
| None of this would be possible without the dedication of our staff, partners, and supporters like you. In the face of rising hate, together, we were still able to make a positive impact and work towards our vision of a Canada, and ultimately a world, without homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and all other forms of oppression so that every person can achieve their full potential, free from hatred and bias. | |
Sincerely,
Helen Kennedy (she/her),
