This afternoon, I was officially sworn in as the U.S. Representative of New Jersey’s 3rd District.

This is a historic moment, folks. I am now the first Black physician with voting privileges in Congress.

As I reflect on this milestone, I’m grateful for the countless trailblazers who fought for justice and equality and made this moment a reality. Being the first means a lot, but it also means there’s still so much work to be done.

Now — after years of serving my country and community as a veteran, doctor, and state representative — I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work for the Garden State in Washington D.C.

Because let’s not sugarcoat it: there’s a lot at stake. The threat of losing reproductive rights, affordable healthcare and many other civil liberties hangs in the balance this upcoming congressional session.

To take on these critical fights, we need the resources to hit the ground running and stand strong against radical Republicans who would restrict our rights and gut vital government services.
