January 6th was more than just an attempt to break into our nation’s Capitol. It was an attempt to break down our institutions and who we are as Americans.

I remember the terror I felt as I hid in the House balcony praying for the safety of myself and my colleagues. I remember how close we were to losing our democracy that day – and remember why I am so committed to protecting our freedoms. And I remember how the courage of Capitol police, our custodians, and staffers helped keep us safe from harm.

I was proud to come back to the House floor to finish certifying the results from our free and fair election, knowing that democracy, not hatred, had won that day.

But far-right misinformation about our political system – especially our election process – has sowed immeasurable damage to the faith so many Americans have in our government. We have to do anything we can to fight back against these lies and their devastating consequences.
