Dear John,
Today, January 6th, Congress convenes to certify the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States. I will be on the floor of the U.S. House for the proceedings to do my duty to sustain our democracy. But I cannot help but feel reflective and angry.
Four years ago, on January 6, 2021, I was in the U.S. Capitol the last time Congress attempted to certify a presidential election and the peaceful transfer of power under the Constitution.
We all remember that January 6th. MAGA insurrectionists attempted a coup inspired by the lies of a defeated Donald Trump. Trump supporters violently attacked U.S. Capitol Police and ransacked our Capitol. Lives were lost, and lawmakers were forced to flee while Trump watched the mayhem from the White House and did nothing.
I was forced to hide for six hours until it was safe to go back to work.
Four years later, the MAGA movement has taken control of the U.S. House and Senate. And in less than two weeks, Donald Trump will be back in the White House. The endless lies, the threats of violence and political persecution against opponents, and the blatant racism, hate, and homophobia did not repel Republican and independent voters. Instead, it was a grotesque formula for Trump’s victory.
Kamala Harris won Minnesota last November. Democrats in Minnesota worked hard, and we delivered – both the votes and a strong message focused on the needs of families and our future. We will never betray our values or the people in our communities.
You know I have a job to do – even with the White House and Congress controlled by MAGA. My job is to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution and Minnesota families.
My other job is to make sure Democrats win and take back the U.S. House in November 2026. And I need your help! We must put a check on Trump and the MAGA extremists he has nominated to the most powerful positions in our government.
