Time moves fast and slow.

It is the paradox of the current era, that time seems to be simultaneously moving very fast and extremely slowly.

On the one hand, it is hard to believe that it is already 2025. Four years have passed since the Jan. 6 insurrection. Joe Biden is set to leave the White House after only one term without having restored a bipartisan commitment to protect democracy.

During his term, congressional Republicans killed federal voting rights legislation while Republicans in the states busied themselves with enacting new voter suppression laws. Election denialism completely captured the GOP during the 2022 midterm elections and was in force until election night. When Donald Trump won, it conveniently fell silent.

Yet, as fast as the last four years have passed, it has only been two months since the November election. Republicans already control the House and Senate. When Trump returns to the Oval Office, the GOP will fully control Washington D.C.

With only a few short weeks left before Jan. 20, the dominant emotions among those in the pro-democracy camp are anxiety and frustration. But time continues to move forward. Soon enough we will see what a unified Republican government looks like. All signs suggest it will be bad in ways we did not expect and worse than we can imagine.

Here is what I am watching for in the days and weeks ahead.

Included in this week’s tip sheet:
* What’s on congressional Republicans’ agenda?
* Will Democrats in the House and Senate oppose or obey?
* What voter suppression laws will state legislatures pass?
* Which media outlets will rise to the occasion?
