Friend,
Four years ago, I was escorted from the House chamber by police officers with their guns drawn. They were protecting me and my colleagues, but more fundamentally they were defending the democratic process. In a shameful moment for America’s democracy, those who disagreed with the results of the election attempted to interrupt the peaceful transition of power. Their attempt to overturn the election sent shockwaves around the world.
This year, January 6th was different. This time, I’m among the many Americans who are disheartened and dispirited by the results of the recent election. But unlike those who assaulted law enforcement officers and invaded the Capitol four years ago, I’m committed to the project of democracy both when we win and when we lose.
There was no violence this time around. No questioning of the legitimacy of voting machines, and no need to rush the Vice President to a secure location. I’ll spend the next four years fighting President Trump’s administration at nearly every turn. I'm proud to uphold his right to take office through a peaceful transfer of power.
Perhaps you’re disappointed in the results of the recent election as well. Perhaps you, too, are not looking forward to President-elect Trump’s Inauguration Day. I get it. I’d only ask that today you join me in restoring our nation’s tradition of prioritizing the continuation of our democracy over the success of any political party. As the world watches America’s first transition of power since 2021, let’s send a clear signal that democracy is still a viable means of self-governance.
I hope you’ll join me in putting partisanship aside tomorrow and setting a good example for those who, with good reason, wonder about the future of the world’s greatest democracy.
— Jim
