Using Plant Identification Applications
Plant identification apps for your phone or mobile device are a good tool to help quickly identify invasive plants (as well as natives) when you are on the go. There are several plant ID apps available. Some are better than others for identifying certain types of plants or areas. For example, not all plant apps are good for identifying aquatic plants.
Here are some tips that will help you get a more accurate result when using plant identification apps:
* Try out several different apps to find which works best for your purposes.
* Take good photos. Keep the background free of other objects if possible, and look for good lighting. Hold the plant against a solid background, such as a piece of paper or your hand.
* For aquatic plants, if you can take safely the plant out of the water, this increases accuracy.
* Upload multiple photos.
* Ensure your device’s location settings are accurate.
* Look closely at all suggested species and when in doubt, do some additional research or consult an expert. There are some great field books out there that you can use to check accuracy once you get back home (or carry one with you).
* Report invasives to the MN Department of Agriculture at *Report-a-Pest [ [link removed] ]* to ensure accuracy and help monitor invasive species.

Viking Lakes
*Viking Lakes Event Noise*
Viking Lakes is a mixed-use master development located near the intersection of Highway 494 and Dodd Rd. in Eagan. The development features a destination venue for year-round entertainment including sporting events, festivals and fundraising walks.
Because Viking Lakes lies directly at the border of Eagan and Mendota Heights, sound from these outdoor events can be heard by Mendota Heights residents. Atmospheric factors such as wind speed and direction, and thermal gradients in the air, cause large differences in sound transmission and affect the volume at which events are heard within the City.
If you hear sounds from an event and would like to determine the source, a calendar of events taking place at Viking Lakes can be found online.
*Note: There is a planned fireworks show at Viking Lakes on Friday, Jan. 17.*
