What’s happening right now in North Carolina is outrageous.

In case you missed it, a GOP supermajority on the state’s supreme court has blocked the certification of November’s state supreme court election — in which Democratic candidate, and currently serving Associate Justice, Allison Riggs was declared the winner.

This is essentially an effort by Republicans to steal a seat on North Carolina’s highest court — a dangerous, anti-democratic power grab that could have long-lasting ramifications.

Here’s a quick explainer from Mother Jones about the stakes — and why it’s imperative that we keep working in North Carolina and across the country to push back against these partisan efforts to undermine the will of the voters: [[link removed]]

“The race has national significance because Riggs’ victory would give Democrats a shot at retaking the court’s majority after 2028. That would allow them to oversee the state’s redistricting process in 2031.

That is particularly consequential because the current majority on the court upheld heavily gerrymandered maps drawn by the Republican-controlled state legislature that allowed Republicans to pick up three US House seats in November — just enough to maintain control of the chamber and ensure one-party rule in DC.”
