January 12, 2025

Dear John:

We are only a week into the 119th Congress and, as promised, we hit the ground running! I'm excited to share all of the things I've been doing during Week One.

On Monday, despite a snowstorm they rarely see in D.C., Congress certified the 2024 election results, bringing us one step closer to putting Donald Trump back in the White House. And then, we got down to the business of Congress.

Laken Riley Act Passes in the House

In the first week of this Congress, House Republicans are already taking action on the priorities the American people care about, passing the Laken Riley Act, to detain and deport criminal illegal aliens. This bill honors of the nursing student who was murdered by a an illegal alien who had previously been cited for shoplifting. This bill requires detention of illegal aliens who commit theft and allows a state to sue the federal government for not enforcing border laws.

When this bill was introduced last year, Senate Democrats and the White House ignored it. This week, I'm saddened and surprised to say, there were still 159 House Democrats who voted against it. Had the policies in this bill been in place before Laken Riley's tragic murder, local authorities would have reported her killer to ICE before he had the opportunity to commit this heinous crime and Laken would still be alive today.

This is commonsense legislation to keep our communities safe. I look forward to passing much more commonsense legislation this year.

Roseau Post Office to be Renamed in Honor of Postmaster Floyd B. Olson

Last year, I introduced legislation to rename the Roseau Post Office in honor of of Floyd B. Olson, who served as the community's Postmaster for 25 years. Mr. Olson served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 and was an active member of the Roseau County Historical Society Board, Roseau County Fair Board, Rose Free Lutheran Church Board & Men’s Club, and the Postmaster’s Association. Mr. Olson passed away in 2017, after decades of service to his community and country.

I am happy to tell you that President Biden has now signed this bill into law.

Mr. Olson was a staple in the Roseau community. He was a man of faith, a family man, and a true public servant. I can think of no better person to dedicate this Post Office to.

Protecting Life and the Use of Taxpayer Dollars

This week, I also reintroduced the Defund Planned Parenthood Act and the Protecting Life and Taxpayers Act

Organizations like Planned Parenthood boast about receiving hundreds of millions of dollars from taxpayers annually to provide so called “comprehensive health care services”. However, their reports show that, in 2020, they performed 383,460 abortions while the amount of prenatal services that they provided dropped from 40,000 to 9,000 in just 10 years. It is clear that Planned Parenthood is not in the business of supporting women but instead providing abortions on demand.  The Defund Planned Parenthood Act prohibits the organization from accessing any federal mandatory or discretionary funds. In order to maintain their federal funding, the organizations must certify that they will not perform or support entities that perform abortions, with exceptions for rape, incest, and to protect the life of the mother.

Americans across the country value the lives of precious unborn babies and it is wrong to force them to spend their tax dollars on something that goes against their closest held values. The Protecting Life and Taxpayers Act ensures taxpayer dollars do not support the destruction of unborn life by requiring all federally funded entities to certify that they will not perform abortions or provide funds to any other entity that performs an abortion, with exceptions for rape, incest, and to protect the life of the mother.

I am honored to introduce these pieces of legislation that helps protect the unborn, women, and taxpayers.

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

Thursday was National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, and I am honored to say that I am this week I became an original cosponsor of the National Law Enforcement Remembrance, Support, and Community Outreach Act.

In today’s world, it is so important that we in Congress memorialize the heroes who were killed in the line of duty and honor the service of all of America’s law enforcement officers. This bill helps honor these selfless public servants while also providing officer safety and wellness programs for those who continue to serve.

We can never fully thank them for all they do to protect their communities, but I am committed to doing all I can to support the men and women in blue.
