In less than a week, President Trump will take office and have the power to eliminate all funding for UNFPA’s lifesaving work. While we hope he makes a different decision this time, it’s what he did in 2017.

And the consequences were devastating, as New York Times opinion columnist Nicholas Kristof lays out in his recent piece: Don’t the lives of women and girls matter? [[link removed]]

“ (UNFPA) saves women’s lives in childbirth. It fights taboos about menstruation that… keep millions of girls out of school. It opposes child marriage and female genital mutilation. It tackles AIDS. It repairs obstetric fistulas. It combats violence against women. It provides screenings for cervical cancer.”

Today, 257 million women who want to prevent pregnancy do not have access to modern or effective family planning methods. And, 1 in 3 women have experienced physical or sexual violence, most often by a partner or family member.

Without U.S. government funding for UNFPA’s sexual and reproductive health services, programs around the world are at risk. Unintended pregnancies will rise and women and girls will die from pregnancy and childbirth complications.

In fact, Kristof reports that 108,000 women and children lost their lives due to defunding during Trump’s first term.
