[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

I’m reaching out to share an update on the wildfires and tell you a little bit about how we plan to move forward together and recover.

Our firefighters have been bravely fighting to try to keep the fires contained, and while they’ve made some progress gaining control over the fires, we’re watching the winds and the weather over the next 24-48 hours very closely.

If you take nothing else from this email, please, sign up for alerts and emergency notifications at NotifyLa.com. Things could change in an instant, and it’s important that you have a way to get trusted, up-to-date information.

And if you or your family has been impacted by the fires, please go to disasterassistance.gov to apply for federal aid and access other resources, including shelter locations should you need them.

I also want to make something clear as we begin the rebuilding efforts, since Donald Trump and a few Republicans are already calling for restrictions on helping California:

Making federal aid for disaster recovery conditional on helping Trump gift his billionaire friends with a huge tax break is a slap in the face to grieving families. And a complete non-starter.

I’m glad to hear some of my Republican colleagues speak up against this dangerous idea. Senator Rick Scott from Florida who’s been impacted by hurricanes when he was governor, and Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina who’s been recently impacted by disasters as well are among those Republicans that agree that disaster aid shouldn’t come with strings attached.

Californians have been there for other parts of the country in their time of crisis, and I’m confident that, despite what a few Republicans are saying, the rest of the country will be there for California.

Thank you,
Sen. Alex Padilla

P.S. If you’re ok and looking for a way to help, please consider making a contribution to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund. Every dollar will go to supporting the families and communities impacted by the fire as they rebuild in the years ahead.
