I’ve officially completed my first week in the Senate – and it was jam-packed. I wanted to send a longer update your way, to explain a little bit more about what a Senator’s day-to-day life looks like – from official business in DC to meeting with constituents in Michigan, we’re off to the races!

I spent the first half of the week in a very snowy Washington: first, I put on my snow gear and walked to the Capitol on Monday, January 6, and performed my constitutional duty as a member of the Senate and participated in the counting and certification of the 2024 Presidential election. I was keen to watch this typically perfunctory process since the only other time I tried to witness a certification was Jan 6, 2021, where I went running away from the Floor to barricade myself in my office.

I also got to attend proceedings honoring President Jimmy Carter, including an arrival ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda and his funeral at the National Cathedral – and I cast my first vote on the floor of the Senate.

My days were also stuffed to the brim with meetings: with other Senators, as I continue to sit down with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to deepen our relationships; with President Trump’s cabinet nominees, as I hear their plans to lead our critical agencies; and with industry leaders from Michigan – whose input and partnership I will rely on as I represent our whole state.

I even found some time to give the DC press corps a hard time as they shivered in the snow – 25 degrees and snowing is a normal winter day in Michigan!

Then in the second half of the week I went from the tradition and fanfare of the Senate to the hustle and bustle of Michigan.

There were more meetings, with local elected and community leaders at home who I’ll partner with over the next six years, and community festivals – including the Fire and Ice Festival, a true taste of Michigan with fires, live ice carving, kid-friendly curling and (plastic) axe throwing.

Detroit’s Eastern Market was also a must-visit in my first week: I’ve been assigned to the Senate’s agriculture committee, and seeing the farmers and vendors at the market really brings home how essential Michigan farmers are to our economy.

And finally – folks in Detroit know that the annual Auto Show is a huge deal and important tradition every year. We’re the state that builds cars, and the auto show is a showcase of the latest and greatest. It’s also a chance for leaders to talk about how to support the industry and Michigan’s workers, and even to support a good cause with their charity preview event (affectionately nicknamed “Auto Prom.”)

I can’t imagine a more perfect first week in the Senate, with a chance to perform my duties in Washington and visit with constituents back home.

I now head in to week two, ready to continue forming relationships, carrying out my voting duties, and this week — attending hearings with cabinet nominees, always asking how their work will impact Michiganders.

Thanks for following along — and thanks for making this possible. Elissa
