[link removed] [[link removed]] Watching the news about the wildfires in LA and hearing about it from friends is just gutting. I know of one friend who lost her home and is deeply hurting. Some of you may also have friends or relatives going through the same challenges right now and coping with this tragedy.

My heart breaks for the people who lost their lives in LA, and for everyone who lost their homes and belongings, and whose lives are now forever changed. In Colorado, we have faced these challenges too – we witnessed it with the Marshall Fire in Boulder County and the fires in Grand County.

It’s being reported that one of the challenges faced in LA is the lack of access to sufficient water. In Colorado, we also have seen firsthand how water supplies are impacted by wildfires, and how access to water impacts our ability to contain them. To protect our land, air, and water, wildfire resistance and building resilient systems are critical.

The devastation of wildfires doesn’t end once they are put out. In Colorado, we’re still learning firsthand the challenges around homeowner’s insurance during this era of climate change. For many of us, our rates are rising. And some have challenges finding homeowner’s insurance. In LA, by contrast, some homeowners did not have any commercial insurance, leaving them vulnerable to the fires that took their home and possessions—leaving them with no resources to rebuild. These are critical issues we have to address to increase our resilience and help those who suffer such losses.

For those of us in government, we must respond to these threats and to the reality of these wildfires and climate change. We must uphold our fundamental role to keep people safe.

And all of us must offer compassion for those hurting, vigilance to respond smartly, and awareness that the threats of climate change are not merely hypothetical—they are already with us.

In the months ahead, I’ll be looking hard at the lessons to take from LA and all Colorado communities that endured wildfires and their losses, and where the state can push back on this threat. And as your Attorney General, I’ll continue to resist projects that increase wildfire risk. As Governor, I will work day in and day out to protect our land, air, and water.

Wildfires are a growing threat. And we must meet them with a call to action - from advancing innovative public policy to opportunities for young people to serve, perhaps as first responders. Over the course of this campaign, I will listen to you and leaders throughout our state, and do just that.

Thanks for supporting me on this important mission of service,

Phil
