It was just announced that a ceasefire agreement has been reached:

A temporary ceasefire is both long overdue and simply not enough.

For Palestinians facing genocide to finally get a break from Israel's
bombing and for hostages to be reunited with their families is something
to celebrate.

But there's no justification that a ceasefire did not come 15 months
earlier to save countless more lives.

The Israeli government was never going to stop this genocide until every
Palestinian life was lost and they annexed an entire nation.

It was always clear that pressure from its biggest weapons supplier was
the greatest path we had to end this violence. Instead, the Biden
administration continued to arm them with billions more in bombs and
weapons.

Even waiting until January 19 gives the Israeli military 4 more days to
wreak havoc on an already obliterated Gaza and occupied West Bank. The US
must ensure they don't.

There's no military solution to this conflict, this is made even clearer
after Israel achieved none of its alleged goals.

What must come immediately is rapidly sending aid to the Palestinian
people, rebuilding of critical infrastructure in Gaza, holding war
criminals accountable at the ICC, a return of all Palestinian and Israeli
hostages to their families and homes, and preventing death for the
millions still at risk—including restoring US funding to UNRWA and
ensuring they can enter the Gaza Strip.

This conflict won't end as long as Israel is allowed to govern as an
apartheid state, occupy and annex the West Bank, blockade Gaza, enable
settler violence, and receive a blank check from US taxpayers.

The Palestinian people deserve a permanent ceasefire and freedom once and
for all.
