Dear John,
Families of Connecticut have five new reasons to be excited this year. Yesterday, the State Board of Education approved five new charter schools in Stamford, Waterbury, Ansonia and New Haven that will provide families with even more opportunities to get the education that is right for their children.
This is great news, especially when considering the number of Connecticut families reporting that they feel like they have a choice in what school their child attends (59% of families) lags well behind the national average (66% of families) according to ([link removed]) our State of Educational Opportunity report which the team published in the fall.
With state and local education financing in flux, it has been difficult to get new charters approved despite their strong track record in Connecticut and their popularity with families. That is to say, new approvals like this don’t happen often or by luck. They require relentless advocacy and meaningful coalitions to happen.
Here’s ConnCAN Executive Director Steven Hernández testifying before the State Board of Education, expressing the need for these new schools:

Congratulations to the Connecticut Charter School Association, LEAD (a 50CAN builder ([link removed]) ) and the entire ConnCAN team for this fantastic win for kids and families.
Best,
