President Biden just banned new offshore drilling in our coastal waters in
a bid to keep them safe from Trump’s “drill baby drill” agenda.^1
But onshore, it’s a different story. While Biden has protected more lands
and waters than any other president, our public lands are still being
auctioned off for drilling, mining, and other fossil fuel extraction that
will worsen the climate crisis.
With just four days to go before Trump returns to the White House, the
clock is ticking for Biden to finish the job of protecting our public
lands.

fuel leasing on our public lands before he leaves office?

Biden also holds another, more dubious, record. He approved 50% more oil
and gas drilling permits on public lands than the first Trump
administration did during the first three years of his presidency.^2
[2]Politico EnergyWire: Biden administration oil drilling permits outpace
Trump. Data from the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management
showed it granted 3,377 permits to drill on public land in 2023.
The U.S. government has been selling coal, oil, and gas leases on public
lands to the highest bidder for decades, helping create the climate crisis
we’re now in. One study found that federal drilling accounts for nearly a
quarter of all U.S. carbon emissions.^3
And this isn’t just about carbon emissions: Climate justice must include
Indigenous sovereignty. Indigenous peoples have long been excluded from
the creation and management of public lands — their land. By continuing to
allow drilling on public lands, the U.S. government is continuing to
trample on Indigenous sovereignty.
While the Biden administration has made it more expensive for companies to
extract oil, gas, and coal from public lands, both science and Indigenous
sovereignty make clear that that’s not enough. We must keep fossil fuels
in the ground if we are going to stop the worst effects of the climate
crisis — and time is running out.

public lands today!
