John —
Far too many kids are eating school meals that contain dangerous chemicals in the ingredients or packaging.
We have to address this issue urgently, and that’s why I introduced the Safe School Meals Act.
This legislation, written in collaboration with moms across the country, will do the following:
- Direct the FDA to set safe threshold limits for heavy metals in school lunches.
- Ban certain pesticide residues in school meals.
- Ban PFAs, lead, and other harmful chemicals from the packaging of school meals.
- Force the FDA to evaluate food additives with harmful impacts — like artificial food dyes that have carcinogenic impacts in school-age children.
The Safe School Meals Act provides actionable steps to remove toxins and encourages farmers across the country to sell their food products to schools.
This is how we set up the next generations for success, John — and ensure kids can eat healthy, nourishing, and affordable meals at schools.
