When we revolt it’s not for a particular culture. We revolt simply because, for many reasons, we can no longer breathe.

Justice for George Floyd, for Breonna Taylor, for Steven Taylor, for Tony McDade, and for every black person who’s been killed by the police.

Justice for the many protestors who’ve been brutalized in the last week, whose lives have been changed forever by the violence of this system, the racist, capitalist police state.

We'll never forget this moment. But let’s not remember it as just a moment, because people's lives are altered by this system every day: shaped, stunted, and cut short.

We see the racist violence the system creates on our streets, where cops take human lives to defend private property, and we must fight it with urgency; we must also confront it in our schools, work sites, hospitals, and homes.

Breaking the systems of oppression that enable and produce this violence—military, carceral, economic—is the only way toward justice. This takes a movement, not a moment.

On Sunday, demonstrators in Oakland had the opportunity to share their signs and stories without pervasive violence or harassment from police. See more Scenes from Sunday’s Car Caravan, led by Anti Police-Terror Project, via East Bay Majority.
On Monday, students from Oakland Tech High School led a "Justice for George Floyd" march. It began at 4 p.m. and continued peacefully until it was broken up by flash grenades and tear gas in advance of the city’s 8 p.m. curfew. With police inciting violence at one protest after another, the anger, urgency, and sense of community that drive this movement are only growing.

WHY DID MINNEAPOLIS EXPLODE?

Last Tuesday, a protest over the murder of George Floyd began in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was quickly met with police repression, and broke out into a riot; property was damaged, the city burned, and a police station was occupied. Within a week, the murder of George Floyd has become a rallying cry, with protests and riots breaking out across the country from LA to Atlanta, Louisville to Portland. These events have led to curfews and mobilizations of the National Guard, all in an attempt to maintain "order." And still, people are showing up in droves to raise the cry that enough is enough. A popular demand of the protestors—shouted out, carried on signs, and spray painted onto windows—is to abolish and defund the police.

Where does this demand come from? Is it enough? And how should socialists be responding to these events? To answer these questions, we first need to understand: why did Minneapolis explode?

Join us for a talk and Q&A with Gerald Smith on Thursday, June 4th at 7pm on Zoom. Gerald has been an active communist and member of the black liberation movement for decades, working with groups like the NAACP, the Congress of Racial Equality, the Black Panther Party, to name just a few. He is a co-founder of Berkeley Cop Watch, and is a current member of the Oscar Grant Committee and the DSA.

THE ORGANIZER’S TOOLBOX: ONE-ON-ONE ORGANIZING MEETINGS

Sunday, June 7 | 1–3 p.m.

Do you want to understand how to move that not-yet-member at night school to action? Did somebody new show up to your committee meeting and you’re not sure how best to engage with them? Did you meet a person while you were canvassing who’s fired up about Bernie but hasn’t gotten involved in politics before?

In this training, we will discuss and practice the art of the one-on-one meeting. This is a powerful and foundational skill for any organizer—it helps us form a political relationship with somebody, understand more about who they are and what motivates them, and gives us an opportunity to make a concrete ask of them.

One-on-one meetings can help us develop political relationships with other working class people, build leadership in your committee, and move people to action. Come to this training to learn the components of a one-on-one and get some real-life practice.

Note: While everybody is welcome, this training event is geared towards people who are already active in the Democratic Socialists of America or aligned organizations.

We are committed to building a multiracial democratic socialist organization that reflects the diversity of the Bay Area working class. Our work ranges from immigration justice and open borders to workers' rights and access to fully-funded public education. In our general meetings, we hold political discussions and report on upcoming RSC campaigns and events. Join us and become a part of the fight for Racial Solidarity!

Racial Solidarity Committee is open to all, and we especially welcome self-identified BIPOC folx. BIPOC facilitators take progressive stack, and we maintain community agreements.
