** School’s Out For Autumn
------------------------------------------------------------

Teachers unions cite "science" to oppose returning to work: Today, the Los Angeles teachers union will call for schools to remain closed ([link removed]) when the school year begins. Gov. Newsom said this week that school reopening in the state would be left to local educators and public health officials. LAUSD superintendents were instructed on Tuesday to prepare for 100 percent distance learning. The California Teachers Association wrote, “Communities and school districts have not come close to meeting the threshold for a safe return to in-person learning, even under a hybrid model.” UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz said, “Science — not politics or the stock market — must determine when schools restart.”

We’ll take that bait: Cecilia Iglesias, head of CPC’s Parent Union, and Dr. Jeff Barke note in a joint statement:

The data shows that kids face an extremely low risk from Covid. In fact, the flu poses a significantly larger mortality threat for this demographic. Emerging research from the Netherlands ([link removed]) , and elsewhere, also finds that children are far less likely to contract and spread Covid. According to an analysis ([link removed]) conducted by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), 22 European countries have reopened their schools and seen no discernable increase in Covid cases. While children face little-to-no risk from Covid, they face enormous consequences if they remain home from school. Research shows that without physically attending school, kids suffer socially, pedagogically, and -- for those who depend on schools for food -- physiologically.

Parents, of course, have the choice to keep their kids at home, based on individual circumstances if they choose. Yet widespread prevention of school return means that countless parents must stay home from their jobs to take care of their kids, delaying the national economic recovery. The evidence is in: We can safely send our kids back to school and fight Covid at the same time.

Will Swaim elaborates in WaPo: CPC President Will Swaim is featured in a Washington Post story ([link removed]) this week about school reopening:

‘Keep your hands to yourself’ doesn’t last very long.’ said Will Swaim, president of the California Policy Center, a conservative think tank. ‘To ask teachers already facing tremendous challenges in schools to monitor social distancing, appropriate mask techniques, is absurd.’ Swaim said he wants officials to pay more attention to data showing kids are rarely sickened by or die of covid-19. No one in California under age 18 has died of it, according to ([link removed]) the California Department of Public Health. Swaim also pointed to research suggesting kids don't spread the virus as easily.

Prager U: Dr. Jeff Barke offers up more science on Covid-19 in a new Prager U video ([link removed]) . He provides tonic to the media’s alarmism about the disease threat.

Prager Two: Ceci Iglesias also appears in a new Prager U video ([link removed]) this week telling her compelling story of why she fights for charter schools. Her video has been featured on ([link removed]) RealClearPolitics.

Orange County Classical Academy Set to Open: CPC contributor Edward Ring highlights ([link removed]) the opening of the Orange County Classical Academy, a new OC charter school that's led by CPC co-founder Mark Bucher and marks our first direct foray into running charter schools. Ed explains the tremendous promise that the OCCA holds for students and the fight that went into getting it opened. He notes, “The way OCCA intends to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic is based on expert medical advice and is unaffected by the opportunistic demands of the teachers unions ([link removed]) .”

Charter schools and their enemies: Economist Thomas Sowell, who recently celebrated his 90^th birthday, discusses ([link removed]) the charter school fight and his new book on the topic in a recent episode of Uncommon Knowledge, produced by the Hoover Institution. Economist Walter Williams also has an op-ed ([link removed]) in the OC Register this week featuring Sowell’s school choice positions.

Speaking of their enemies: On the latest episode ([link removed]) of National Review’s Radio Free California, CPC Board Member David Bahnsen and President Will Swaim discuss how teachers union pet Joe Biden declares total fealty to the NEA, and how Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers reward failing public schools while penalizing successful charter schools. They also highlight how the political correctness mob is coming after John Wayne Airport.

A supreme victory for school choice: CPC contributor Larry Sand covers ([link removed]) the Supreme Court’s recent Espinoza decision, which expands school choice: “The Supreme Court finally clears the way for students to use tax-credit scholarships to attend religious schools; the teachers unions and much of the MSM are apoplectic.”

Must-read police union expose in the Wall Street Journal: The Journal reports ([link removed]) this week on the bare-knuckle tactics that police unions have used to become so powerful:

Many police unions attribute their negotiating tactics to a 1997 book written by John Burpo, “Police Association Power, Politics, and Confrontation: A Guide for the Successful Police Labor Leader.” Mr. Burpo, who formerly led a group that represented law enforcement unions in Texas, said he was inspired by left-wing union organizer Saul Alinsky and has been hired by unions around the country to help negotiate better contracts.

In an interview, he recalled presenting a city manager with incriminating financial information and threatening to make it public unless he acquiesced to a union demand for money; bringing the widow of a slain officer to city council meetings to help police negotiating a new contract; and creating television commercials focusing on Latino gang violence to generate fear among residents to give officers a stronger hand at the negotiating table.

Alinsky’s tactics put to use in Santa Ana: As we teased last week, Ceci Iglesias had an op-ed ([link removed]) in the Sunday edition of the OC Register detailing her intense battle with the Alinsky-like Santa Ana police union after she opposed pay increases and supported oversight:

Union President Gerry Serrano waged a ruthless smear campaign, calling me ‘unethical, unprofessional and criminal’.… Despite my pro-immigration stance, Serrano and his allies claimed that I support President Trump’s anti-immigration policies, including family separations and a border wall. The Democratic Party of Orange County called me a “Latina Trump.” A recall campaign flyer depicted my face next to Trump’s with the headline: “Inglesias = Trump.”

Cancel culture craziness continues: The latest story ([link removed]) of California cancel culture may be the most outlandish of them all. Emmanuel Cafferty, a Latino truck driver for San Diego Gas and Electric, was fired recently after he inadvertently made the OK sign with his hand – a symbol that has been coopted to supposedly mean “white power.” In reality, Cafferty just had his hand outside his window while driving when some social justice warrior snapped a photo.

“When my supervisor said that I was being accused of doing a white supremacist gesture, that was baffling,” Cafferty said. “I don’t know how long it’s going to take me to get over this, but to lose your dream job for playing with your fingers, that’s a hard pill to swallow.” In an Orwellian statement, SDG&E revealed, “We conducted a good faith and thorough investigation that included gathering relevant information and multiple interviews, and took appropriate action.”
