Good morning!

As both the week and month draw to a close, here at California Policy Center we are excited to bring you all the latest news about the perilous state of the Golden State!

On Monday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the formation of the Skid Row Clean Team, in an effort to combat the typhus outbreak and the growing number of rats in the city. The program ([link removed]) , which relies on the employment of two dozen homeless, pays employees $15/hour to pick up trash in the 54-block area of the city.

Meanwhile, a compromise was reached on Wednesday night in Sacramento between charter advocates and the powerful state teachers unions. According to the LA Times ([link removed]) , the deal gives public school districts more authority to reject petitions for new public charter campuses, phases in stricter credentialing requirements for public charter school teachers, and places a two-year moratorium on new virtual charter schools.

Rising pension costs continue to drive up the total cost of education in California. Despite this, teachers unions statewide are doubling down and pushing for unionized public charter schools that contribute to CalSTRS. One of the biggest reasons has to do with funding. One of the oft repeated talking points is that there is a teacher shortage nationwide. It is used by the teachers unions during strikes and repeated by pundits in the media. Mattis will have a conversation with Nixon Foundation President and CEO Hugh Hewitt about his incredible career, from leading troops into battle in three wars to commanding American forces across the Middle East as head of CENTCOM.
