In the past several months, over 50 MILLION Americans filed for unemployment benefits. And the U.S. government responded: Congress sent workers nearly $250 billion in unemployment insurance through $600-a-week checks, according to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal.
But here’s what I want to know: Now that the $600-a-week checks from the federal government have dried up, did anyone run the numbers on what it will cost us to deny this money to our most vulnerable? We’re navigating a pandemic, and we’re not giving our people access to housing, health care, or money to put food on the table. We are paying for these failing systems with our lives.
