Join us October 8th for a discussion with Midy Aponte, chief experience officer at Spitfire Strategies, as she discusses the current reckoning of our nation’s history and highlights the role of communication in reexamining our collective relationships with the land, and each other. Midy's portfolio at Spitfire centers on a wide range of public interest issues, including income inequality, environmental protection, health equity/social determinants of health, racial justice, internet freedom and governance, and immigration and refugee resettlement. Her clients include global, national and state foundations such as the Ford Foundation, Environmental Defense Fund, Environmental Defense Fund Action Fund, Earthjustice, ClimateWorks, The Aspen Institute, Hispanics in Philanthropy and the Rose Community Foundation as well as mid-sized organizations such as CFLeads, Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition and Upwardly Global.

Urban Forestry Council
We're excited to announce our Community Project Coordinator, Abe Lenoch, has been appointed to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry Council.
Abe will serve a 3-year position on the council as a statewide community and nonprofit representative. 1000 Friends is excited to continue our urban forestry advocacy as a member of the council!
From DNR: "The purpose of the council is to advise the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on the best ways to preserve, protect, expand and improve Wisconsin's urban and community forest resources."

Roads themselves are often overlooked in our urban land use pattern, even though streets and sidewalks can make up almost 80% of the public space in cities. In fact, in downtown Milwaukee, nearly 40% of the total land is devoted to road infrastructure. Most of these streets are necessary to create a complete transportation network. However, large urban freeways, which dominate the landscape, have caused more harm than good....
