Friend --
Today we passed the
Tenant Protection Act of 2019. The bill, AB 1482, overcame
its final hurdle and is on its way to Governor Newsom's desk to be
signed.
AB 1482 expands protections to 7 million tenants, covering
more renters than any single tenant protection bill in recent US
history.
This victory proves that
California’s renters are a force to be reckoned with, and we aren’t
even close to being done yet.
As an organization led by people of
color, seniors and those most vulnerable to becoming homeless without
tenant protections, we will keep fighting and keep winning until every
single Californian is guaranteed a safe and affordable home. That
includes winning stronger and permanent rent control at the local
level. That includes making homes permanently affordable by putting
land into community control with innovative local solutions like land
trusts. That includes winning strong regulations of corporate
landlords and Wall Street speculators that have been ravishing our
communities.
Today is proof that when we build a multi-racial grassroots
movement of tenants, we can win. Join
us in fighting over the long haul to make California a state
affordable to EVERYONE by becoming a sustainer!
We knew we would be significantly outspent by corporate money. We
knew that the corporate landlord and real estate lobby had held a
stronghold over Sacramento for decades. We knew that the odds were
stacked against us. But that didn't stop us from fighting. It didn't
stop us from consistently fighting to make the bills stronger when we
knew we risked losing them. It didn't stop ACCE leaders from sitting
in the Governor's office overnight to urge him to step up for this
bill - and it worked.
Join
our movement to stop displacement in California and keep families in
their homes!
From the bottom of my heart, I want to THANK each and everyone one
of you that joined us in the streets, signed petitions, called and
emailed legislators, and donated - all of your actions helped secure
this victory. And this is just the beginning - we've got bigger, and
more ambitious plans ahead to create the kind of California we all
dream of.
Join
us in building the biggest, boldest and most ambitious movement for
renters rights this state has ever seen. Click to
sustain!
In solidarity,
Christina
