Dear John,
It finally feels like fall here in Phoenix, cooler temps are bringing the crisp evenings that remind us all why we call Arizona home. Every year at this time I marvel at the desert's beauty. The golds of sunsets are tinged with pink, the hills are spotted with yellow and purple wildflowers, the blue of the sky is pure and unmarred. These days it's hard to turn our attention to these daily gifts, but once we do, the comfort they bring is precious.
What better day to acknowledge such simple joys than today? Thanksgiving. After all, so much feels off this year for so many families across our country - they may be unable to be together, or heartbroken at the empty chair at the table, or unsure whether they'll be able to survive their economic struggles. Nothing feels quite right and few things feel the same in our world right now. When we're given small glimpses of things we usually take for granted, they ground us, stabilizing the floor beneath us.
For over 9 months, our lives and our world have been turned upside down by coronavirus. But there is a light at the end of this dark, difficult tunnel: an effective vaccine that should be ready for use within the next few months. This is nothing short of remarkable. In the meantime, we each have to do our part to limit spread until everyone is protected. We are all in this together and, together, is how we'll find our way out.
Throughout this year, I have heard many speak of feeling alone, disconnected from their families, friends and coworkers, communities. One truly rewarding way of filling that void is by serving others. Whether it is serving meals at a soup kitchen, dropping off groceries for elderly neighbors, checking in on a friend's emotional health, or delivering pizza to healthcare workers, we all have the power to make a difference in someone's life. These acts of kindness, big or small, reflect empathy and bigheartedness, and let others know they are not alone, even when we're physically apart.
This evening, I will share a meal with my family and we'll reflect on our blessings. When I count my many blessings, I think of all those who supported us, our campaign, our mission, and our democracy. I am deeply humbled by the stories you shared, the belief you bestowed, and your abiding commitment to making our communities - and nation - stronger, healthier, safer, and more just.
Despite the tumultuous times we live in, there is reason for hope of better days ahead, a bright new chapter on the horizon. Our family wishes yours a happy and healthy Thanksgiving, filled with warmth, compassion, and unconditional love. We thank all of our first responders, healthcare workers, frontline and essential workers, and those in uniform for all they do and sacrifice. And, to those who struggle today, may your burdens be lightened. We hold you close and wish you peace.
Together, we are a strong and resilient nation. Stay hopeful, look out for one another, and take good care.
With love and gratitude,
