Biaggi Plan to Stop New York's Eviction Crisis
Friends -
There is a common misconception that evictions are not happening in New York State. That is not true. Evictions are happening, especially upstate.
And it's time the legislature, and the Governor, put a stop to it.
This is a public health issue. When people are evicted, where do they go? They move in with family, or they stay with friends, which puts more people at risk. If people have to enter a crowded homeless shelter, that exacerbates the spread of the virus.
One study with researchers from Johns Hopkins and other universities found that lifting state bans on evictions has caused almost half a million additional COVID cases and more than 10,000 deaths in the United States between March and September. And that is to say nothing of the trauma inflicted on evicted families or how it impacts the education of displaced children.
And with so many New Yorkers struggling financially, and with rent making up such a large percentage of people's spending, this is a very dangerous situation.
There are three steps we must take right now to protect New Yorkers:

With a vaccine on the horizon, we are moving closer every day to a return to "normal." But for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, the end of the pandemic means the threat of being removed from their homes. In the short-term, that will make it easier for the virus to spread. But we also need to give those struggling families a chance at rebuilding their lives when the time comes. It’s the right thing to do morally, and it’s the right thing to do for our state’s recovery.
All my best,
