Earlier this month, unelected Senator Kelly Loeffler was heavily criticized for allowing Doug Collins to attack Reverend Raphael Warnock and the Black church community of the iconic and revered Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the church home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

One would think that after such criticism, Loeffler would apologize or at least dial back the rhetoric against a Pastor and his church, both possessing a long and noble history of fighting for the civil rights and liberties of millions of Americans. Instead, Loeffler doubled down on her friend's rhetoric, repeatedly attacking Warnock by taking his past sermons out of context and turning them into ruthless attack ads.

Now, a collective of prominent church leaders of all walks of life representing their church communities has been forced to write an open letter asking Loeffler to cease her disparaging attacks against Reverend Warnock.

We have not seen such an intense and open assault on Ebenezer Baptist Church, its pastor and its people since the Civil Rights era. The fact that this action must be taken in the first place is a sad testament to the kind of heartless games Kelly is willing to play in order to win, and to how little times have changed over the last 50+ years.

We cannot allow someone who stoops this low in a craven attempt to cling to power to be re-elected, because we cannot expect her to provide any meaningful representation for her constituents, especially people of color, minorities, and those of us in the faith community.
