** CALIFORNIA'S CLIMATE CLEAN UP PROJECT
------------------------------------------------------------

Good morning!

What a week and month it has been! If you’re like me, you’re feeling both exhausted and out of touch with the rest of the world. Lucky for you, California Policy Center is here to catch you up on some of the major news stories you may have missed!

Last Friday, Gov. Newsom issued an executive order mandating that the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTERS) stop investing in fossil fuels in favor of so-called green investments. According to the Sacramento Bee ([link removed]) , the order requires CalPERS and CalSTERS to work with the Newsom administration to “provide a timeline and criteria to shift investments to companies and industry sectors that have greater growth potential based on their focus of adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change, including investments in carbon-neutral, carbon-negative and clean energy technologies.”

The next day, volunteers descended on the City of Angels to remove waste from homeless encampments. The #LosAngelesCleanUp ([link removed]) was organized by Scott Presler, a conservative activist who has led similar clean-up efforts in Baltimore, Newark, and Virginia Beach. In nine hours, Presler and 200 volunteers removed an amazing 50 tons ([link removed]) of trash in downtown Los Angeles.

Gov. Newsom told ([link removed]) the United Nations (U.N.) Monday that he was “humiliated” because Donald Trump is his president. Speaking at the UN Climate Action Summit, he and others condemned the president for his lack of action on the issue. Your favorite weekly news piece is working overtime to find photos of the Golden State Gov. pedaling a bicycle to and from New York City.

While attending the UN Climate Action Summit, Gov. Newsom announced on Wednesday that California would launch a satellite to track climate change. The LA Times ([link removed]) reports that Bloomberg Philanthropies pledged money to develop a satellite that would help the Golden State track the emission of greenhouse gases.

Also on Monday, 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg spoke before the UN. In her address, she excoriated politicians for doing nothing and taking away her future. But as CPC contributor Larry Sand argues, she could not have been further from the truth. He says the source of climate anxiety among millennials and Gen-Zers isn’t so much science itself, but “science” as taught in public schools. Click here to scare yourself. ([link removed])
