Dear friend,
New Jersey history is Black history. American history is Black history. We cannot properly honor the remarkable work Black Americans have done for our country without recognizing the extra lengths they have always had to go to achieve the same as so many other Americans.
Black artists like Jacob Lawrence and Maya Angelou captured our world through paintings and poems and helped us to imagine something better. Black activists like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks started movements and brought our country closer to that more perfect union. Black athletes like Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson inspired us and broke down barriers.
Black History Month is a time not just to celebrate these great achievements of Black Americans, but also a moment to recommit ourselves to fighting today's inequities.
After the murder of George Floyd, millions of us marched in the streets to demand justice and say "Black Lives Matter." We participated in what is now being called the largest movement in American history.
But we have to do more than march. In Congress, I was proud to co-sponsor the Justice in Policing Act , legislation to make Juneteenth a national holiday, and a restored and enhanced version of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 . And I'll keep working to make sure equality is a reality for us all.
I hope you will join me and take action to recommit to this fight for racial justice as we celebrate Black history. Learn more about how you can support the ACLU of New Jersey [[link removed]] or the NAACP [[link removed]] .
