HAPPY EARTH DAY!

To celebrate, 5 Gyres is launching a new podcast to explore ideas and stories from the plastic pollution movement. We invite you to listen in on our conversations with some of the leaders in our industry as we uncover new ways to tackle this global issue. While a name is still in the works, please join us for our first recorded conversation.

Launching the 5 Gyres Podcast: Episode 1

Our Co-Founder and Interim Executive Director, Anna Cummins hosts our first ever 5 Gyres Podcast episode to discuss the slander and distraction of Seaspiracy while shining a light on the future of the plastic pollution movement through the lens of science with her two guests, Co-Founder and 5 Gyres Research & Innovation Director, Marcus Eriksen and 5 Gyres Research & Innovation Manager, Lisa Erdle. Be a fly on the wall as we take an in-depth look at how our understanding of plastic pollution has evolved with the discoveries we've made over the past ten years and where we're focusing next to combat this ever growing problem to our environment.

** #SkipTheStuff ordinance passes in LA!
------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed an ([link removed]) ordinance ([link removed]) making single-use accessories available by request only!
"This Council's passage of this ordinance is one step of many we need to take globally to address the catastrophic environmental and economic effects of single-use plastics,” said Councilmember Paul Krekorian.

** TrashBlitz Results: Denver Colorado

------------------------------------------------------------

In October 2020, a group of 100 brave Denverites, along with our partners on the ground Inland Ocean Coalition, Into The Sea, & Ecocycle gathered (socially distanced) to collect information on urban and home waste - categorized by type, material and brand - across the Denver metro area. Volunteers from neighborhoods across Colorado helped collect the data, sampling their own home waste and 30 randomly selected sampling points across Denver over the course of two weeks.

**
What did they find?
------------------------------------------------------------

Plastics ranging in all forms and sizes, textiles, face masks, food wrappers, straws, and so much more. While ample evidence of the global plastic pollution problem exists, having local data specific to neighborhoods is a powerful way to engage stakeholders and policymakers. In order to change globally, we need to think locally.
