Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

In this edition of the Goethe-Institut Washington newsletter, the Beuys are back in town – Joseph Beuys, that is. In celebration of the avant-garde German performance artist's 100th birthday, Goethe-Instituts and Goethe Pop Ups across the USA are taking a look at Beuys' work and reflecting on his legacy and continuing impact on contemporary artists. In cooperation with the Hirshhorn Museum, we are presenting #aboutbeuysDC: Reflections on Beuys, a series of eight short videos in which local artists express their relationships to Beuys' work in their own creative and unique ways.

The Goethe Pop Up in Seattle, together with the Henry Art Gallery, is offering two online workshops on Beuys, accessible to interested participants anywhere. Meanwhile, our colleagues in Chicago will stream I Like America and America Likes Me, Helmut Wietz's documentary of Beuys' 1974 performance of the same name.

Reflections on Beuys

On the occasion of Joseph Beuys’ 100th birthday, the Goethe-Institut Washington and the Hirshhorn Museum paired up and challenged nine contemporary artists to reflect on Beuys. In short videos, each artist conveys their relationship to Beuys, his work, and his legacy.

Re/frame Pop Up Edition: Joseph Beuys Centennial

Beuys believed strongly that everyone is an artist, and that art has the power to bring about social and political change. Join the Goethe Pop Up Seattle in an online discussion of works in the Henry Art Gallery’s collection by Beuys, as well as a variety of artists who were influenced by him.

Joseph Beuys: I Like America and America Likes Me

Documented in this film by Helmut Wietz is the performance "I Like America and America Likes Me" at Gallery René Block, New York, May 23 through 25, 1974. Joseph Beuys, upon his arrival at John F. Kennedy Airport, immediately was wrapped in a felt cloth and driven to the gallery in an ambulance. There, in a cordoned-off room, a coyote awaited him.

Beuys lived with the coyote for several days and nights, observable at all times through a chain-link fence. In addition to the felt blanket, his props included a walking stick, a triangle, a flashlight, gloves, and 50 copies of the "Wall Street Journal" per day. After the performance, Beuys was transported back to the airport in the same way he arrived.
