Friend --
In this week’s #AbbieForMayor
#CoffeeClub, I chat about my best quality as a leader and the first
items I will address as Mayor.
As far as my best quality, I
believe it’s my ability to listen and convert what I'm hearing into
action. Some people listen all day long, years even, with no action.
If you aren't listening to opportunities to move forward together,
then you're not leading, you're just taking up space at the table. I
have a track record of bringing people together and letting them do
their jobs. I am not a police officer or a firefighter, or a
transportation expert, but by bringing more knowledgeable people to
the table, we can figure out any problem our city faces,
together.
As Mayor of Kokomo, I will
immediately launch three initiatives.
- I will hire more Public Safety
Personnel. We need them. They are the foundation to my much broader
public safety plan that includes connecting our first responders to
community resources to take a big picture view of creating a safe
community in Kokomo.
- I will launch a Work Based
Learning Task Force. We are behind, and we need to start now. In the
next 2-3 years, half of our workforce will be eligible to retire. If
we aren’t strategic and aggressive in our efforts to connect people
with job training to get the skills e to work the jobs available
today, we will have a much steeper hill to climb when we have to pivot
to filling the jobs of tomorrow.
- I will commission a baseline road
report with goals for the next 4 years with quarterly benchmarks. The
citizens of Kokomo need the roads we drive every day to work for us.
We need to use a straightforward pavement management system to ensure
that our roads and streets are repaired before they
deteriorate.
