As long as he owns your tools he owns your job, and if he owns your job he is the master of your fate. You are in no sense a free man. You are subject to his interest and to his will. He decides whether you shall work or not. Therefore, he decides whether you shall live or die. And in that humiliating position any one who tries to persuade you that you are a free man is guilty of insulting your intelligence.
-- Eugene Debs
Comrades,
Consider vacation. Holiday. Time off. Do you ever get it? Does someone else decide when you’ve earned it? Does any of that feel fair?
We talk at length about the unfair distribution of resources under capitalism. But Americans, even American socialists, have a hard time discussing the unfair distribution of labor. We work too much. What else can we say?
If you work for a living, the last year may have erased the already-faint concept of "vacation" from your mind and vocabulary. For those of us who had to work through the pandemic, just the same as for those who couldn’t work, COVID-19 put us under all kinds of additional stress, interfered with our recreation, and placed restrictions on our travel. Both within and outside of our jobs and careers, we worked unpaid time and overtime, and gave up on our time off.
Can we get it back? Make it up? Wouldn’t you like to? Those moments are in the past, but we can make them count, we can take them back, in the future – an organized workers’ movement can take power back from the capitalist class, who are so used to telling us when we need to work and when we may briefly relax.
Comrades, believe it: you have earned a vacation. But also understand, the boss will never give it to you; you have to be the one to take it.
Solidarity!

Our committee builds and maintains projects such as (but not limited to) our mobilizers program, planning and execution of chapter socials, new member events, and Organizer's Toolbox Trainings, as well as managing the onboarding of new members. SIGN UP TO TALK TO A MOBILIZER!
Are you a new DSA member? Or are you looking to get more involved with East Bay DSA's projects and campaigns? Sign up to talk to a mobilizer!
Here are three reasons to sign up to talk to a mobilizer:
1. Meet a fellow socialist organizer
We want to build a movement of millions of working class people and change the exploitative and oppressive system in which we live, but we do that first and foremost by building one-to-one connections with each other.
2. Answer your questions
Learn more about DSA, the local East Bay chapter, and our different committees and projects.
3. Get more involved
The main thing a mobilizer will help you with is getting more involved in DSA. Maybe there’s a campaign or project you’re particularly interested in, or maybe you’re a blank slate and you don’t really know what to do. Either way, a mobilizer will help you figure it out.
