Hi there,
As you can imagine, these past few weeks have required an all-hands-on-deck approach to confront the challenges we face both at home and abroad. I'm proud of the work I've been doing in Congress to support America's families, confront the climate crisis, rebuild our infrastructure, and defend our democracy. And I'm also proud of my team's around-the-clock effort to help evacuate as many Americans and Afghan partners as possible with America's longest war coming to an end. Today, I wanted to take a brief moment to update you on some of the meaningful progress here at home:
1. With new state-of-the-art facility, Ocean County's veterans will finally get the care they deserve.
From my first day in Congress, one of my goals has been to improve health care access for New Jersey's veterans. That is why I'm proud to have helped deliver a new state-of-the-art health care clinic to Toms River, NJ. With 40,000 veterans, Ocean County has the most veterans of any county in New Jersey. This new facility will deliver the more convenient, high quality care they deserve.
2. Our $1 trillion infrastructure plan and Build Back Better budget are the biggest investments in America in generations.
Last week, I voted to advance both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the Build Back Better budget. For the first time in decades, we now have a plan to repair our crumbling infrastructure, implement green technologies to combat climate change, and create millions of good-paying jobs to support working families.
And here in New Jersey, we'll have $12 billion in new investments for transportation links as well as millions for green technologies, broadband access, and improved cybersecurity, and upgraded water systems.
Still, I remain deeply concerned that the current budget framework does not do nearly enough to avert the dire and catastrophic consequences of climate change, especially in communities like mine that see flooding and hurricanes battering our coastal homes. I will work aggressively in the coming days and weeks to maximize America's investments in combating climate change and providing a better future for my kids, your kids and grandkids, and future generations.
3. The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is heading to the Senate.
I will forever treasure the moment I got to introduce my sons to one of my own personal heroes, John Lewis, on the House floor. I thought of him last week as I cast my vote in favor of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This bill will restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Advancement Act, requiring states with a recent history of racial discrimination in voting to pre-clear any voting changes with the U.S. Department of Justice. It's long past time for Congress to repair the damage done to voting rights by the disastrous Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder, and I urge Senate Republicans to allow an up or down vote on this bill as soon as possible.
We're undoubtedly making progress, but not everyone is on board. National conservative dark money groups are creating division by running $700,000 worth of attack ads against me funded by the American Action Network (AAN). As one of only 5 Democrats running for re-election in a district won by Trump, they've set their sights on me.
With all this dark money lining up against us, I need your grassroots support to keep standing up for policies and programs that benefit America's families. We're fighting for an America that works for all of us, and that starts by building an even stronger campaign to counteract the influence of outside groups in NJ-03. Can I count on you to donate $5, $10, $25, or whatever you can before our end-of-month deadline at midnight tonight to keep building a better future for our families?
I've always believed in working together to build a better future, and we're starting to see the outlines of what happens when we do. Your support is what gives our grassroots movement momentum, and I am so excited to be doing this work with you. Thank you for being a part of it.
Let's keep pushing forward together.
Andy
P.S. Our opponents won't succeed because they're wrong about what Americans want. In Congress, we're building a budget that takes on the climate crisis, makes it easier for families to afford health care and child care, and finally asks corporations to pay their fair share to make America work for all of us. Will you help us make that happen? secure.actblue.com/donate/donate-andy-kim
