Rage Against the Machine
Comrades,

There’s a class war going on and the frontline is everywhere. Capitalists have used the fragmentation and upheaval of the global pandemic to tighten the screws on workers, but we're standing together and taking the fight to them.

Look at HelloFresh: the company used the opportunity of COVID-19 to make enormous profits off meal delivery, while their warehouse workers in Richmond endured dangerous conditions, including a major outbreak of COVID at work. Well, now those workers are forming a union, and they're holding a community town hall today at 6 p.m. where you can hear their stories and learn how to support them.

Or take Instacart, who knew their workforce had limited job options during the pandemic, and used that leverage to successively decrease pay and improve their own (already bloated) bottom line; those workers are organizing a boycott of the platform, demanding occupational benefits and an end to Instacart's opaque and exploitative system of wages.

It's also true for AMPTP, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Using COVID-era disruptions as pretenses, these huge companies are pushing a classic anti-worker agenda and stalling negotiations. So IATSE, the union for film and TV crews, is getting ready to vote on a strike for fair wages and working conditions.

When workers stick together and fight, we win - so join us! We have two major labor events this weekend (the Beer & Roses Social on Saturday and our monthly Labor Committee Meeting on Sunday) and a canvass on Friday for the AC Transit budget workers and riders deserve!

And if you do stay in one of these days or nights, do something for your fellow workers. Delete Instacart, get ready to support the HelloFresh union, and don't get so caught up in any on-screen drama that you forget about the villains off-screen, running the studios.

DEMANDING HAZARD PAY, TRANSIT WORKERS FORCE AC TRANSIT TO THE NEGOTIATING TABLE

All across California, frontline workers have demanded and won hazard pay during the pandemic, especially in grocery, retail and healthcare workplaces. Transit workers in the Bay Area, though, have not received one penny of extra compensation for continuing to work in life-threatening conditions. On July 28, over 40 AC Transit workers and riders spoke up at the AC Transit board meeting to demand transit workers be paid retroactive hazard pay.

SIGN UP TO TALK TO A MOBILIZER!
Are you a new DSA member? Or are you looking to get more involved with East Bay DSA's projects and campaigns? Sign up to talk to a mobilizer!

Here are three reasons to sign up to talk to a mobilizer:

  1. Meet a fellow socialist organizer
We want to build a movement of millions of working class people and change the exploitative and oppressive system in which we live, but we do that first and foremost by building one-to-one connections with each other.

  2. Answer your questions
Learn more about DSA, the local East Bay chapter, and our different committees and projects.

  3. Get more involved
The main thing a mobilizer will help you with is getting more involved in DSA. Maybe there’s a campaign or project you’re particularly interested in, or maybe you’re a blank slate and you don’t really know what to do. Either way, a mobilizer will help you figure it out.

Solidarity is not a matter of sentiment but a fact, cold and impassive as the granite foundations of a skyscraper. If the basic elements, identity of interest, clarity of vision, honesty of intent, and oneness of purpose, or any of these is lacking, all sentimental pleas for solidarity, and all other efforts to achieve it will be barren of results.
