Eighty-one percent vs. three percent. That represents the number of landlords nationwide versus the number of tenants nationwide who have attorneys to represent them in eviction court. This matters: renters who have lawyers are much more likely to win their cases and stay in their homes. That’s why the California Legislature overwhelmingly passed AB 1487, which would provide educational outreach to tenants and access to legal services. That’s why we need Gov. But the bill is in trouble and we don’t have much time. We need Governor Newsom to sign this crucial bit of legislation, especially now as the state faces an eviction tsunami starting October 1st when the moratorium is due to expire. We must flood the Governor’s inbox in huge numbers. He needs to know that California tenants helped him defeat the recall and now he needs to stand up for the 17 million Californians who rent! Tell Gov. Newsom to sign AB 1487 and give California renters a fighting chance to stay in their homes! <[link removed]>
If AB 1487 isn’t signed into law, thousands of California tenants - many of them Black, Brown and low-income - will continue to be at the mercy of eviction courts unfairly stacked against them, while COVID-19 still rages across the state and the nation. Without a lawyer or tenant advocate to defend them, tenants in eviction court stand a greater risk of ending up unhoused and getting infected from a deadly disease. AB 1487 will ensure that tenants have a better chance of staying housed, thus preventing COVID from spreading further. Tell Gov. Evictions ruin people’s lives and financial livelihoods. California renters need real protections and a fairer shake in our courts. Let’s get AB 1487 to the finish line!
