Dear Friend,
As a critical component of our work to build the public support and political will to enact policy changes that secure freedom and opportunity for immigrants, we closely track elections and monitor campaigns that use divisive, anti-immigrant, and racist rhetoric as a strategic ploy.
In past elections, we’ve run extensive programs to track and defeat misinformation on immigration while moving the needle towards reforms that will put 11 million undocumented Americans on a path to full citizenship. This includes conducting polls in key states, training community organizations, sharing our findings and critical research through blog posts and educational videos, running ads in states with high-stakes elections, and getting out the vote.
In 2020, we analyzed thousands of campaign ads aired by Republicans and Republican-allied groups that attack immigrants, stoke xenophobia, and inflame racism. This year, we launched our new GOP Ad Tracker website. We used this tracker as a resource to monitor 2021 elections — including in Virginia and Arizona — and expose racist and xenophobic ads put out by candidates and campaigns.
This tracker is one of the many tools we will use to continue this work in the 2022 midterm elections. This year’s elections showed that Republicans are sticking with racist and xenophobic dog-whistles as a strategy to sow division and mobilize their base, and we don’t expect 2022 to be any different.
