November News from AHC Inc. News from AHC Inc. l November 2021 Developing affordable homes and helping communities thrive since 1975. Sharing the Thanksgiving Spirit The spirit of Thanksgiving got an early start at AHC. During the last few weeks, afterschool students created colorful turkeys and messages of thankfulness and several large community centers held dinners for residents. At Gates of Ballston, Resident Services and AHC Management staff served 200 "grab and go" turkey dinners with all the fixings to residents of all ages. Wonderful to see so many happy faces - particularly the kids who loved the pre-dinner cookie treats! From all of us at AHC, we want to express our heartfelt thanks for YOU. We wish you and yours a happy and healthy Thanksgiving with family, friends, and loved ones. AHC Boosts Community Engagement Efforts AHC is delighted to welcome Roxana Hernandez as our new Community Engagement Assistant Director. With over six years of experience in the mental health, community impact, and housing stability fields, Hernandez will coordinate community engagement across AHC, ensuring resident and community perspectives will inform strategic decision-making throughout the entire organization -- from communications to real estate development and property management. In this newly created role, Hernandez will serve as a liaison to residents, resident advocates, and other community members. "I'm excited about joining the AHC team," said Hernandez. "I look forward to working collaboratively to find creative ways to help empower residents and ensure their voices are heard." A long-time resident of Arlington County, Hernandez graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) with a degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology. Welcoming AHC's New Board Members AHC welcomed our new Board with a lunch and tour at The Apex, one of our newest affordable apartment communities in Arlington. We also thanked outgoing Board Chair Bob Bushkoff for his many years of service and leadership. The group toured the property, from the sport court to the roof to check out the solar panels, and enjoyed lunch surrounded by AHC students' artwork. Mixed-Income Montgomery County Project Meets Critical Needs AHC's innovative Randolph Road project in Montgomery County checks lots of housing needs, including nearly 200 deeply affordable apartments for households earning 30 to 50% of the area median income, 80 hard-to-find three- and four-bedroom units for families, plus homeownership opportunities. Also, the six-acre project is located in the bustling Viers Mill corridor in Silver Spring near multiple transportation and employment options. And, finally, the project also includes onsite programs for residents along with green space and play areas. Located on County-owned land, the redevelopment is a partnership among AHC, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Maryland, and Interfaith Works. We will break ground in early 2022, with the first new residents expected in 2024.
