Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights hero Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., who dedicated his life to championing equal rights for
all.

Dr. King’s work contributed to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of
1965, which outlawed racial discrimination in voting.

I am proud to say that we are carrying on Dr. King’s legacy by expanding
voting rights here in New York City. Just a few days ago, Mayor Eric Adams
cleared the way for 800,000 legal, permanent non-citizen residents to vote
in citywide elections.

But in other states, legislators are working to turn back the clock on
voting rights. Republicans in Texas and Georgia have passed laws that
exist solely to make it harder for people of color to vote.

And now, it seems likely that Republicans in Congress will block the
passage of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights
Advancement Act, two pieces of legislation that would strengthen voting
rights.

Members of Dr. King’s family have stated that, this year, Congress should
honor Dr. King by passing these bills. Today, I join their call, in honor
of Dr. King and everyone else who has fought back against racial
discrimination.

I hope today is a day of reflection on how far we have come, and how much
work we have left to do. Thank you for joining me in support of justice
for all.
