Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,

It's difficult to celebrate anything as Ukraine fights for its freedom, but a new plastics treaty on the horizon gives us a glimmer of light during these dark times.

Delegates from 193 countries convened in Nairobi last week for UNEA-5.2. The result - an ambitious, comprehensive mandate to negotiate a legally binding treaty that addresses the full life cycle of plastic - is a huge win for the Break Free From Plastic movement. Delegates at UNEA-5.2 were greeted by artist Ben Von Wong's Giant Plastic Tap ([link removed]) . The 30-foot tall installation was created with plastic from Kibera in collaboration with the Human Needs Project.

Los Angeles City Councilmembers voted unanimously to approve a landmark series of instructions to phase out single-use plastic. Stay tuned for updates and action items from our Reusable LA ([link removed]) coalition!

Congratulations to the new Dr. Lisa Erdle! Lisa completed her Ph.D. on microfibers last week and joins our team full-time as the Director of Science & Innovation.
