Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Improves Outcomes in Poor Communities

Researchers: Nathan Barker, Gharad Bryan, Dean Karlan, Angela Ofori-Atta, and Christopher Udry
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) may be an effective mental health approach for people living in poverty, who are especially vulnerable to mental distress and face unique demands on their mental “bandwidth.” A new study conducted among ultra-poor people in Ghana showed that CBT improved participants' mental and physical well-being, socio-emotional and cognitive skills, and economic outcomes.
