There's something very wrong with this picture.
On Monday, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released the
latest in a series of increasingly alarming reports on the worsening global
climate crisis. Commenting on the report's findings, UN Secretary General
Antonio Guterres did not mince words:
“INVESTING IN NEW FOSSIL FUEL INFRASTRUCTURE IS MORAL AND ECONOMIC
MADNESS… THE TRULY DANGEROUS RADICALS ARE THE COUNTRIES INCREASING
PRODUCTION OF FOSSIL FUELS.”
Just two days later, the Trudeau government issued a most telling response
- two thumbs up to a Norwegian company to get started on the Bay du Nord
project, a massive new fossil fuel drilling project 500 km off the coast of
Newfoundland. The proposed 1,200-meter deepwater well will extract up to a
billion barrels of oil over its 30-year lifespan.
What were we just saying about dangerous radicals?
THIS PROJECT IS A CARBON BOMB!
Burning a billion barrels of oil will spew an additional 400 million tonnes
of carbon pollution into the atmosphere. That's the equivalent of running
100 coal-fired power plants or seven to 10 million gas-powered cars for a
year.
Who's going to speak out against this? Certainly not the NDP - they've
signed on to support the Liberals through thick and thin. Too bad that
means backing an "emissions reduction" plan that's designed to fail [1].
NO, THE ONLY CLIMATE CHAMPIONS LEFT IN PARLIAMENT ARE THE GREENS.
Here are a couple of recent interventions from Mike Morrice [2] and
Elizabeth May [3]. Day after day, they stand up in that place and demand
real action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We need more of them - and to get that we need your help.
