Dominican University of California full-time faculty vote to join CFT!
We are happy to report that this week the full-time faculty of the Dominican University of California have voted to join CFT in an election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board.
Founded in 1890, Dominican University of California in San Rafael is an independent institution offering more than 60 majors, minors, and concentrations. In total, there are 103 full-time faculty in the bargaining unit.
Dominican University School of Business professor Dr. Thomas Cavanagh is proud of the effort and thrilled with the results of the union vote. “Helping to unionize the Dominican faculty has been one of the proudest accomplishments of my life,” said Dr. Cavanagh. “I’m continually amazed by the quality of the people who work here, and I’m excited that we will now have a binding process to advocate for our students, ourselves, and our university.”
CFT President Jeff Freitas congratulated the faculty on their union victory and pledged to support them as they negotiate their first contract with the university.
"We are honored to welcome the full-time faculty of the Dominican University of California into the CFT family,” said Freitas. “We are eager to negotiate a contract with the administration that recognizes the contributions the faculty make everyday to the students and the mission of the university.”
Welcome to the CFT family Dominican University of California full-time faculty!
El Camino Federation of Teachers president Kelsey Iino appointed to LACCD Board of Trustees
This week El Camino Federation of Teachers president Dr. Kelsey Iino was appointed to the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees. According to CFT President Jeff Freitas, Kelsey is an ideal fit for this new role because of her years of experience as an educator and a leader in her college, her union, and her community.
“Dr. Iino is an excellent addition to the LACCD Board of Trustees,” says Freitas. “She is a steadfast advocate for increasing community college funding and will be a consistent and reliable voice for LACCD’s students, faculty, and classified staff.”

COVID vaccine mandate in schools delayed until at least July 2023
Yesterday, officials from the California Department of Public Health announced that they will delay implementation of Governor Newsom’s COVID vaccine requirement in public schools until at least July 1, 2023.
The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet fully approved COVID-19 vaccines for individuals of all ages within the 7–12 grade span. California officials pointed to this delay when announcing the revised timeline for the vaccine mandate, citing the need to ensure sufficient time for school districts to successfully implement the requirement.
