We at America’s Voice mourn the lives lost and send our condolences to the families lost in the horrific shootings last weekend.

The unfortunate and tragic events in Buffalo, New York last weekend have sparked conversations all week about the racist conspiracy theory about white “replacement” brought on by a migrant “invasion.”

The ideas espoused by the gunman are veil white supremacists and anti-Semitic lies that are anti-democratic and encourage this sort of racist murderous terror. Unfortunately, we have seen far too many leading Republican leaders and prominent right-wing media personalities mainstream these repugnant ideas.

The “replacement” conspiracy theory stems from the belief that Jews (or, in a less explicitly anti-Semitic version “the Left” or “liberal elites”) are waging a coordinated invasion of non-white immigrants to replace white Americans and undermine our democracy and country. The racist fiction of a migrant invasion is directly linked to the “great replacement theory.” The subtext is not subtle — the dangerous “other” is invading us so they can replace us. These theories, which have also been behind the terrorist attacks committed by white nationalists in Charlottesville, at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburg and a Walmart in El Paso, have been mainstreamed by Republican leaders and right-wing media.

Republican politicians such as Rep. Elise Stefanik, Florida Senator Rick Scott, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and Rep. Michael McCaul and many others have used these exact same irresponsible and dangerous conspiracy theories.

In the past year alone, Republican candidates have run over 100 different ads with “invasion” rhetoric. How do we know? We’ve tracked them all.

Immigrants seeking a better life for themselves and their families are not violent “invaders,” nor are they trying to “replace” anyone. Immigrants make our country stronger and instead of dehumanizing them or labeling them as a threat to our future, we should be working towards passing legislation that creates a functioning immigration system and protects and welcomes asylum seekers with dignity and respect and creates legal pathways for immigrants living and working here to remain in the U.S..

The spread of racist conspiracy theories by politicians, celebrities and media figures must stop once and for all before more lives are lost.
