The Maryland State and DC AFL-CIO's Committee on Political Education last week voted to endorse candidates in the following statewide races: United States Senate - Chris Van Hollen; Maryland Governor - Tom Perez; Attorney General - Anthony Brown; Comptroller - Brooke Lierman. "We work to elect proven leaders who will improve the lives of working people, bring fairness and dignity to our workplaces, and secure social equity," said Maryland State and DC AFL-CIO President Donna S. Edwards. "All of the endorsed candidates have long track records of fighting for workers and their families, and this is our opportunity to stand with those who have stood with us."
Annapolis police ratify new union contract with 19% raise
Last week, UFCW Local 400 members at the Annapolis Police Department voted unanimously to ratify a new union contract. The two-year agreement increases starting salaries to $60,000 and provides a 19% pay boost over the life of the contract. Juneteenth was also added as an additional paid holiday, beginning in 2023. "We think this is a big step toward our goal, shared with the city, of recruiting and retaining the best officers," [link removed] said Mike Wilson, UFCW Local 400 Vice President and Executive Assistant to the President. The new collective bargaining agreement covers approximately 104 officers with the Annapolis Police Department.

Tomorrow--and the next--workers will keep going."
Nurses sound alarm on staffing crisis: "I greatly appreciate @VP and @Surgeon_General meeting today with @NationalNurses VP LaKisha Little-Smalls, RN and other members of DCNA at @ChildrensNatl in DC," tweeted NNU Executive Director Bonnie Castillo @NNUBonnie. "In this national nurse staffing crisis, the need for federal nurse-to-patient ratios has never been more clear!"
"Covid Is Not Over": "One MILLION people dead in the United States," tweeted NNU Political Director Ken Zinn @kennethzinn. "This is a calamity of epic proportions. The Hill workers press on: "An overwhelming majority of the reporters, social media curators, designers, copy editors and other newsroom workers at The Hill have formed a union to advance more equitable and transparent working conditions and strengthen our journalism," tweeted The Hill Guild @hillguild on May 18. On Monday they tweeted that "We learned this weekend that nexstar management (The Hill's parent company) has decided not to voluntarily recognize our union. while we're disappointed with that decision, we're confident we will be able to secure a victory in an nlrb supervised election."
Daily Kos workers vote in union: "Yesterday, upon completing our card count, @DailyKosGuild was officially certified as the representative of a majority of @dailykos employees across the country," the Daily Kos Guild tweeted last Thursday. "We are deeply inspired by our members' hard work over this nearly three-year organizing drive, who came together to support a more extensive and collective voice in the work of Daily Kos. As we begin bargaining our first contract, we will seek to improve workplace culture and morale, staff development/retention, reduce staff burnout, and secure additional employee resources through programs, wages, and benefits."
Labor Quote: Mike Wilson
